Metadata controls how a page on your website appears in Google search results and when someone shares it on social media. The Metadata section in SEO is where you can add or update metadata for any page on your site, including pages that aren't managed in the CMS.
What you can do here
From the SEO > Metadata page, you can:
- Add metadata for any path on your site, such as /contact, /about-us, or /location.
- Update metadata for blogs and posts. Blogs and posts are automatically added to this list when you create them. Editing them here updates the same metadata you'd see on the SEO tab of the blog or post, and vice versa.
- Add or override metadata for global pages, such as the product search results page (/p) and product details pages (/d/*).
- Use wildcards (*) in a path to apply the same metadata to a group of pages.
About paths
The Route Path is the part of a web address that comes after your domain. For example, if your site is yoursite.com and the page is yoursite.com/contact, the path is /contact.
Paths in Metadata must start with a forward slash (/). A few common examples:
- / for your home page
- /about-us for your About page
- /contact for your Contact page
- /location for your location page
- /products for your products landing page
About wildcards
You can use an asterisk (*) as a wildcard to apply the same metadata to a group of pages. This is useful when you want one set of SEO and social settings to cover an entire section of your site.
The most common example is product details pages. Every product on your site has its own URL under /d/, so using /d/* lets you set metadata that applies to all of them at once.
Product details and search results pages
Your product details pages (/d/*) and product search results page (/p) come with SEO and social sharing metadata built in. The system automatically generates titles, descriptions, and keywords using your product information (brand, product name, color, specs) and your company info (company name, city).
You can add an entry in Metadata to override these defaults if you want different wording. For most sites, the built-in defaults work well and don't need to be changed.
Add new metadata
Step 1: Open the Metadata page
- From the left sidebar, click SEO.
- Click the Metadata tab.
You'll see a list of metadata entries that already exist for your site, including entries that were created automatically for your blogs and posts.
Step 2: Start a new entry
Click the Add Metadata button in the top right corner of the page.
Step 3: Fill in the details
SEO Basics
- Route Path (required). The page path this metadata applies to. Must start with a forward slash, for example /contact. You can also use a wildcard like /d/*.
- Page Title. The title shown in browser tabs and Google search results.
- Page Description. A short summary (one to two sentences) shown under the title in search results.
- Keywords. Words and phrases related to the page. Type a keyword and press Enter to add it.
Social Share: Open Graph
Open Graph controls how the page looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, and most other social platforms.
- Open Graph Title. The headline shown in the share preview.
- Open Graph Image. The preview image shown in the share. Click the field to pick an image from your Assets Library or paste an image URL.
- Open Graph Description. A short blurb shown under the title in the share preview.
Social Share: X (Twitter)
These fields work the same as Open Graph, but apply specifically to X (formerly Twitter).
Step 4: Save
Click Save & Publish in the top right corner.
Next to the Save & Publish button is a dropdown that controls what happens after you save:
- Continue Editing (default). Stays on the metadata entry so you can keep editing.
- Go To Listing. Returns you to the metadata list.
- Create Another. Clears the form so you can add another entry right away.
Edit existing metadata
- From the left sidebar, click SEO, then click the Metadata tab.
- Find the entry you want to update. You can search by route path or other fields using the search bar at the top of the list.
- Click the pencil (edit) icon next to the entry, or click the three-dot menu and choose Edit.
- Update the fields as needed.
- Click Save & Publish.
Note: If you edit metadata for a blog or post here, the same changes will show up on the SEO tab of that blog or post.
Quick edit from the list
For small changes, you can edit some fields directly from the metadata list without opening the full editor:
- Double-click the cell you want to change (for example, the Route Path or SEO Title).
- Type your update.
- Click outside the cell or press Enter to save.
What if I see an error?
- "Route Path is required." The Route Path field must be filled in before you can save.
- "Route Path must start with /." Add a forward slash at the beginning of the path. For example, use /contact instead of contact.
