Working with Assets

The Assets Library is where you store and organize the files used on your website, like images for blog posts, product photos, brochures, and videos. You can upload files, organize them into folders, and reuse them anywhere on your site that accepts an image or file URL.

What you can do here

From the Site > Assets page, you can:

  • Upload new files to your asset library.
  • Create folders to organize your files.
  • Browse and search your existing files.
  • Edit file details, including alt text.
  • Rename, move, duplicate, or delete files and folders.
  • Take action on many files at once using bulk actions.

Supported file types and size limit

You can upload:

  • Images: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, SVG.
  • Documents: PDF.
  • Audio and video: MP3 and MP4.

The maximum file size is 25 MB per file. If you have a larger file (especially video), try compressing it before uploading.

How to upload a file

Uploading a file is the most common task on this page. Here's the full step-by-step.

Step 1: Open the Assets Library

  1. From the left sidebar, click Site.
  2. Click the Assets tab.

You'll see a list of all your existing files and folders.

Step 2: Navigate to the folder where you want the file

Before uploading, decide where the file should live. You can upload directly to the top level of your library, or navigate into a folder first.

  • To open a folder, click its name in the list.
  • To go back, use the breadcrumbs at the top of the page (for example, Site > Assets > Brochures).

The file will be uploaded into whatever folder you're currently viewing.

Step 3: Start the upload

Click the UPLOAD button in the top right corner of the page. An upload window opens.

Step 4: Pick the file

Either drag the file from your computer into the upload area, or click to browse and select it.

Check before uploading:

  • The file is one of the supported types (image, PDF, MP3, or MP4).
  • The file is under 25 MB.
  • The file name is descriptive. Good file names help you find files later. For example, showroom-green-bay.jpg is better than IMG_4823.jpg.

Step 5: Add file details (recommended for images)

Once the file is uploaded, you can add details about it. The most important one for images is Alt Text.

Alt text is a short description of what's in the image. It's used by:

  • Screen readers, so people who can't see the image can still understand what it shows.
  • Search engines, to help your pages rank better in image search.
  • Browsers, when the image fails to load for any reason.

Good alt text describes the image in a sentence or two. For example: "Modern living room with light hardwood flooring and a gray sectional sofa."

Step 6: Save and close

Close the upload window when you're done. The file now appears in the list and is ready to use anywhere on your site that accepts an image or file.

Using a file on your site

Once a file is uploaded, you can use it in places like:

  • The Featured Image of a blog post.
  • Open Graph or Twitter share images on the SEO tab.
  • Inside the rich text editor when writing a post.

In any of these places, click the image picker (often labeled Open Graph Image, Featured Image, or similar) and pick the file from your library.

Organizing with folders

Folders keep your library tidy as it grows.

Create a folder

  1. Navigate to the place where you want the new folder. If you want it at the top level, make sure you're on the main Assets page (not inside another folder).
  2. Click the CREATE FOLDER button in the top right corner.
  3. Type a folder name. Use letters, numbers, dashes, and underscores. Spaces are allowed inside the name, but the name can't start or end with a space.
  4. Click Create Folder.

Open a folder

Click the folder's name in the list to open it. The breadcrumbs at the top of the page show where you are.

Rename a folder

Click the pencil (edit) icon next to the folder to open the edit dialog, change the name, and save.

Finding files

If your library has a lot of files, you can narrow the list:

  • Search. Use the search bar at the top of the list to find a file by name.
  • Filter. Click the filter button to filter by date created or date updated.
  • Sort. Click any column header to sort the list by that column. Click again to reverse the sort.

Editing a file's details

You can update information about a file (like its alt text) after uploading:

  1. Find the file in the list.
  2. Click the pencil (edit) icon next to it.
  3. Update the details in the file viewer.
  4. Close the viewer when you're done. Changes save automatically.

Moving files and folders

You can move files and folders into a different folder in two ways.

Move using the menu

  1. Click the three-dot menu next to the file or folder.
  2. Choose Move.
  3. Pick the destination folder from the dialog.
  4. Click Move Assets.

Move by dragging

Drag a file or folder from the list and drop it onto another folder in the same list. The file or folder moves into that destination.

What if I see an error?

  • File too large. The maximum file size is 25 MB. Compress your image or video before uploading.
  • Unsupported file type. You can upload images, PDFs, MP3, and MP4 files. Convert your file to one of these formats first.
  • "Please enter a valid folder name." Folder names can include letters, numbers, dashes, underscores, and spaces (but not leading or trailing spaces or other special characters). Try a simpler name.
  • "Folder Name is required." Type a name in the Folder Name field before saving.
